0:13HostWelcome to Interceptor Beyond Podcast. My name is Arthur and today we have Paradeiser, a cool local band, cool musicians and cool people. Recorded at Arena Beisle sometime after the gig, I think it was quite late. So don't be surprised by my speaking slash talking abilities. The guys were fine. It was just me. Don't forget to follow this podcast on Spotify or any platform if you dig it. And rate this show on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. And follow this podcast on Instagram at Interceptor Beyond. Alright, let's talk to Paradeiser.
0:48PARADEISERHello, we are Paradeiser. This is Robel. I am Chris.
0:53?Hello, Robel.
0:54HostAlright guys, we're recording right now after your gig, which was intense. It was the first time for me. People loved it. Energetic, moving around. And as I said before, just before the interview, you're the reason why there are so many skateboard people in the scene. Because you played last year, where?
1:20PARADEISERAt St. Mark's DIY. This is a local DIY skate park.
1:26PARADEISERWe are like people, like we're building that. Not only we do, like a lot of people. So it's kind of common, like if you know each other as friends, you know, like more people come to the concert. And so you have your friends at the concert. And that was the situation today. Yeah, the gig was like just like the O.I. is. It's locals for locals.
1:51?Yeah.
1:52HostIt was, I think you mentioned, it's like a third gig in a while.
1:57PARADEISERYeah, of course. We played our first gig at St. Mark's last year, 2022.
2:04?Yeah.
2:05PARADEISERJuly. I think July, right? Yeah. In the summer. In the summer, yes. And this was our third gig. And yeah.
2:13HostAll right. So you are a super underground band. And actually, like what I'm doing the interview with you is actually bringing you to the surface, which we don't want in a way, because we want you to be underground in a way. Because underground is cool. I don't know. That's how you feel. But I only know you because, I don't know. Somebody mentioned that you played at St. Mark's. And I saw on YouTube, there's like a couple of live videos that you recorded and stuff. I saw that people really dug it. Super cool. And especially tonight. Dude, like people. It was fucking awesome.
2:55PARADEISERThank you. Thanks a lot. Thanks a lot. It's nice to hear, really.
2:59?Yeah.
3:00HostSo, okay. We need to do the basic shit, right? Like, so, so, how, how, who are you? How did it happen? Like, we, because we don't know shit, you know?
3:11PARADEISERDid we, did we talk about it? We are two people, like in this, you know, in the interview now? Because.
3:17HostNo idea. So, two people. There's only two people. There's a drums and a bass and vocals. That's it.
3:24PARADEISERYeah, of course. Yeah, we just met at St. Mark's Skatepark. We were both skaters. And I had that idea about doing a bass and drum duo. Concept, concept, yeah, concept stuff. And I met Robo, and he was just into it. And we, yeah, we just did a couple of songs. What we can get out of this principle to play with two people, and how, what, what, what is working, you know, if you're playing with two. Yeah, we just figured it out from the, from, from point zero, actually. Um, I just bought a bass guitar from, from friends. Um, I used to play guitars years, ages ago, uh, in a, in a punk band in my teenage years. But, uh, I just started playing bass two years ago, and I just figured out, uh, what kind of sound, uh, I wanted to do with this project. And for me, it was right, really clear that I had to, uh, do a really straightforward split sound into a bass and a guitar amp, uh, that it sounds like a really full set. And, yeah, I think it's, it's cool. Yeah. I like the sound.
4:45HostYou know, it sounds like, it sounds like bullshit in a way, in a way that, what do you mean with
4:53?that?
4:53HostI mean that because I've seen you live right now, and it sounds really cool, right? Like fucking awesome. Thank you. And you tell me that you like started recently and you bought a bass recently and all the stuff. So, what I hear today sounds like you've been practicing for years and you brought it up. What I mean is like.
5:14?Two years. Two years.
5:16PARADEISERTwo years. We are practicing two years and playing live since.
5:21?Last year.
5:21PARADEISERYeah, last year. Yeah.
5:23?Yeah.
5:23PARADEISERFor, uh, four and a half years of practice time, making songs and then, yeah.
5:28HostYeah. Yeah. What I mean? That's what I mean. It's like, it's like not enough. Like usually it's not enough time.
5:33PARADEISERThat's what I mean. We've concept band. So, we, we're asking ourselves like what, um, uh, how do I say it in English? Uh, how, um, no, it's not a problem. Let me, um, let me think. Um, there are separate things, you know? So, the guitar or bass player in this case, and now I have to say bass, um, have bass. He has guitar because he octavized the signal and put it in the guitar amps. So, we have bass, guitar, and voice. So, we have three separate things with you. If you separate the drums now, you, you just don't have the drums. You have the bass drum. You have the snare. So, the beat. Then, you have, uh, the hi-hat and the right. So, with this, you can do something. But, if you separate the cymbals completely from this, um, thing. And, if you work with cymbals in the, in his riffs and playing separately my beats. So, this is kind of, um, you have more things. Let's say it like that. You have more things, what you, uh, what you are thinking like that, you know? So, you have, you have more elements. So, now I have it. You have more elements that you think if you are two people. And, that's what we are talking about, this concept principle.
7:01HostSo, basically, basically, the limitation of being a two-person gives you more freedom to express yourself.
7:09PARADEISERPerfectly. That's what I wanted to say. Thank you, man. Yeah. Yes. That's actually the point. Shortly. And, a little bit more with the separate things like guitar, bass, cymbals, bass drum, snare, things. So, yeah. This is the... That's the thing. And, maybe, Robles is overthinking it a bit. He's, maybe, he's maybe...
7:30HostJust, everybody's high here. So, it's fine.
7:33PARADEISERNo, maybe, uh, Robles is the nerd in the band. And, I am, uh, just, uh, the guy. Super nerd. No, I am not a super nerd at all. Uh, I am just a guy that, uh, is feeling, uh, is feeling it. For me, it's not important, uh, what, uh, Robles is playing right now. What, uh, vier-fünftel-takt or whatever he is going to bring in for the next song or whatever. I just, I just have to feel it. And, that's the thing, I think, we're gonna have a good, uh, vibe together. Yes, our communication, our communication, our communication is quite good. I bring in the feeling, yeah. Yeah. I would say the same, yeah. We are really good in working together.
8:20?Yeah.
8:20PARADEISERUh, I really have to say that. A very good point, uh, did you mention before? It has been our third gig. And, you said, wow, it was, like, on fucking point, yeah. Um, yeah, that's the shit. That's what we want to be on stage. We want to nail it, yeah. We just go on stage when we feel it. We really want to blow it, yeah.
8:45HostBut, like, uh, I want to say, like, okay, this, your third gig, okay, the first gig, official gig, that you had in 2022 in the Submax, uh, it was a skate, whatever. What was it? Skate, skate, skate.
8:59PARADEISERYeah, it was, it was just, uh, summer fest at our skate park, yeah. At our, at our DIY skate park, uh, skate park, where we built ourselves, so, that's, like, DIY party. Yeah, it was just, uh, just as I said before, locals for locals, yeah.
9:14HostYeah, locals for locals, but at the same time, you know, you check it out, it's on, I laid available on YouTube, and you can see it, how it was, like, the first gig. It's, like, it's really important for the history of the band, anyways. It's, like, okay, this was, like, the first gig, okay, 2022, and now you say it's, uh, third gig, like, uh, what the fuck? I mean, it's, uh, what I mean is, like, from the first gig to the third gig, quality is, like, really there, high-quality shit, you know? Like, you played today with the high-quality stuff, like, uh, yeah, yeah, and you could see, I don't know, as I said, I don't know if you saw it from the stage, but people really loved it. Right? Right? This is, I, this is my, uh, I was in the back of the audience, I could see the shit, right? You don't have time to process it at the moment, because nobody told you so far, but I can tell you, I was in the back, I could see, people loved it. Right? So, for me, it's a bit of a mystery, how, what, how the fuck it does work? Like, it works, you know, you have something there, you know?
10:23PARADEISERLike, like, you, um, what can it be? Um, let's try, let's, let's try to explain, um, we can explain, we can explain our style, we can't explain, uh, we know the, we know the concept thing, we know that if we make breaks, one, two, three, start again.
11:11PARADEISERYeah. For example, then you have a lot more signals, but if you have two people, you know, like, it have to be really precisely, because you hear every, every mistake. So, yeah, that's the shit, and so, yeah, the practicing is always with metronome, so I play metronome all the time, and, yeah, and we say, in our language, this is tightness, and it have to be tight for, especially the breaks, and, yeah, this is it, um, metronome has a lot of, a lot of, yeah, um, practice, yeah, this, this is all.
11:53HostSo, what else, it's, it's, I'm sure it's not only metronome, it's something else, it's like the idea of, not only metronome, but, okay, we don't talk between the songs, like, there's more to it, I feel it, there's something more, just, not just metronome. Okay, how, how, how, let's do it like this, how do you compose songs, jam sessions, you have ideas, or, or, jam sessions?
12:19PARADEISERNo, no, no. No, no, no, jam sessions. We're not, we're not a jam band, no. No, never, never. We had, uh, we had, of course, um, kind of, uh, I'm coming with a riff, uh, he's, uh, playing some stuff, uh, what he's like to put into a new song, whatever, a new riff, a new beat, uh, whatever, and we just, uh, figure out, okay, this, this beat is like, feeling like, going that way, this beat is going, like, that way, uh, but, we, we are discussing a lot. Yeah, of course. You know, like, how it feels, and, and a lot, in our songs, I think, for my opinion, is the breaks, you know, like, make something, like, something faster, or, like, something slower, and then, what's going on, you know?
13:14HostWhat do you mean the breaks, what do you mean the breaks, in the song, the breaks, or the breaks when you discuss stuff?
13:19PARADEISERNo, no, no, the breaks in the songs, you know, like, uh, this is, uh, breaks in the songs, how, how you structure a song, this is something, what I really like as a drummer, and with, if you are with two people, I want to be inside the, the whole, um, how to make songs, I really want to be inside that, and with, with, with us, it works really, really well, that, that everybody put the ideas inside, and if the ideas inside, we have to figure out, how we, we put all together, you know, like, and, and all, what I said before, um, voice, guitar, uh, bass, uh, basic drums, cymbals, we try to, all, all, all these things, so, yeah, this is, but, but, at the, at the, at the time right now, uh, we really don't, uh, had figured out our way, our sound, what we really like to sound, uh, we, we did so many different songs, we feel, we are in the beginnings, yeah, we just did the beginning, yeah, it's cool, yeah, we will define ourselves when we do our records, actually, and this is something I'm really, uh, excited about, uh, in the next months, that we do our first demos, all DIY, actually, yeah, yeah, we try, that, to, that we do all DIY, and this, this will, this will actually, um, give a, give a good focus at, uh, what our sound, our band, our style, will be in future, so, let's say, to the end, maybe, where we come from, is the DIY skateboard area, so, we try the same with the DIY music, yeah, of course, of course, yeah, I think this is the, the important thing for us, so, let's try to don't get, we do it ourselves, if, if, if we make a record, it will, it will be all DIY, we do it DIY, that's, that's
15:38Hostour, okay, but when, this year, when, uh, now it's 2023, uh, almost May, when, when do you want
15:46PARADEISERto release the full album? Uh, as soon as possible, as soon as possible, man, it's bullshit, man, I'm motivated, man, you asked the question before we asked this question, so, that's why we're laughing this, a lot, so, yeah, we don't know, we just, uh, it's the same like a mini ramp, you know, how many
16:08Hostsongs do you want to have an album, okay, let's do it like this, I will help you, we have, uh, we have, right, how many songs do you want to have an album, 10? Yeah, 10 is good, yeah, 10 is a good
16:16PARADEISER10, right now we got 12, plus minus 2, plus minus 2, plus minus 2, okay, fine, 10 songs, okay,
16:23Hostokay, okay, uh, uh, do it yourself, so, you can record it at your home base, whatever, right? At the rehearsal room, yes, yes, all right, so, you have, uh, three months to do that, are you okay of releasing an album in September? No, never, but we, about it, no,
16:42PARADEISERfucking way, I know what it takes to do this, but let's try to make a single, uh, two songs
16:50Hostor something, you know, two singles, two singles before the full album, right? Uh, I think the
16:56PARADEISERway, uh, I want to do it, uh, is just, uh, take the first steps, do some DIY recordings, try to do a demo, maybe four songs, uh, put that on Bandcamp, maybe do a tape or whatever, yeah, and then, uh, focus, uh, on an album, and maybe with your question, maybe we, we try
17:20Hostto do it a little bit faster. So, but do you want to get signed by a label?
17:26PARADEISERThat's a good question, uh, but no. Uh-huh. Everything DIY. Yeah. Well, when I was interviewing
17:34HostClutch, they said the same thing, do it yourself. Yeah. So that you can keep all the money to yourself, and, I mean, it's not, it's not even about the money. Okay. It's not, it's not
17:45PARADEISERabout the money. Okay. We played at Arena Paisel now. We, really, we don't think about money now. We think, we think about, uh, by the way, I'm 37, you are? Uh, 36, 37. So, so, come on, then, you know, like, we are based people. We really want to do what we want to do now. And, and, and if you ask the money question, please, uh, we don't think about that now. No. Really, really not. We don't. Uh, and this question, forget it. And actually, um, I don't think that we both, uh, are trying to do our, uh, our money out of music business or whatever. We just want to do what we love. That's what we mean with DIY, I think. And I know how hard it is to be a musician, to live from music. Yeah. It means a full-time job. Yeah. It is. You have to, uh, sell everything you're into to get more and more audience. But I need to say this because,
19:00Hostfor example, you see a third gig, it's a third gig, right? And I've seen the people reacting really nice. Yeah, but they're always friends, you know? It's not only friends. Uh, you have a good groove. You have a good vibe of how you play, right? It's possible that at some point you will have to make a sacrifice that you need to sacrifice your personal life to get the tour going, for example. Yeah, of course. Yeah. Are you ready to do that? It's a difficult question. Um,
19:36PARADEISERthe word sacrifice is difficult, I think, because if we are be able to manage ourself, what you can do, we, we, uh, be able, it's more easier than we think. I think, uh, I really want to play, uh, for loads of people around Europe or whatever. Um, going on tour is definitely, um, um, one kind of, uh, uh, uh, goal, um, in life. Yeah. It's a lot of goal, of course, to do, uh, um, to play, uh, tours, whatever, uh, but I really don't want to live from music. Uh-huh. You want to be free from making money
20:21Hostfrom the music so that you can make music how you feel. Of course. Yeah. That's the deal. Okay. Ah,
20:28PARADEISERit's totally cool. It's totally cool, man. The money, the money question is always a different
20:33Hostquestion, you know? Yeah. Yeah. I always ask, uh, difficult questions. I always hard, ask hard questions about the money and all the stuff, because I want to see if people are ready, like, really ready for the, for the thing, especially when they're starting out. It's, it's, it's a hard questions to ask, but I want people to start thinking about it. Anyways. Yeah. The first person maybe who asked,
20:58PARADEISERwho asked that, you know, we, we didn't ask that before. So maybe our questions. He's actually the first person who asks us any questions. That's true, man. That's so true. All right. I don't want to
21:12Hostbother you too much. We're after the gig anyways. Uh, you don't have too many songs online, right?
21:19PARADEISERBut yeah, we just have two shitty YouTube videos online right now, you know, but still, uh, usually
21:26HostI ask, uh, the musicians to watch song should I put in the end of the interview? So it's good, good introduction to your band. So is there a song that they can put at the end of this interview
21:38PARADEISERof your band? It's a good introduction to your band. The next one that is going to be online. I don't know. The first one that we record actually in a few months. On YouTube? I don't know. Just tell me the name of the song. There were just two, uh, two songs, uh, three songs online right now.
21:59HostSo that's it. Just tell me one song. Job Relevance. Thank you, paradise. And thank you, dear listener, for staying to the end. Don't forget to check out this video that they were talking about on YouTube. I put the link in the description to this episode. So check it out. Don't forget to follow this podcast right now. If you dig it, more stuff to come until next time. Take care and bye.
