TRIP

Multicolor Desert

A psychedelic voyage through a world of plastic, pollution, and unlikely characters.

Animated music video

ContributionConcept, storyboards & animation

The idea

The band’s concept album provided the starting story. I expanded it into a colourful animated world, combining characters, drawings, and collage with a love of post-apocalyptic cinema.

Behind the work

Production notes.

01

Build on the band’s story.

The song and concept album established the world. Research into post-apocalyptic fiction helped turn it into a script and storyboards, which were reviewed with the band before animation.

02

Let colour tell part of the story.

A black-and-white nightmare sequence, inspired by classic horror, opens the film. It makes the acid colours of the polluted world that follows feel more intense.

03

Keep the characters readable.

Oversized eyes make the main character’s expressions visible on a small screen. Boats built from plastic waste and deliberately improbable creatures extend the song’s world through individual details.

01 / Process log

Expanding the concept album

TRIP supplied a base story connected to the album. Research into Waterworld, Mad Max 2, Fallout 2, Escape from New York, The Road, and Night of the Comet expanded it into a polluted world with its own inhabitants and transport. Yellow and brown established pollution and fumes before the palette broke into acid colour. Seven storyboard pages mapped the entire voyage for band approval.

02 / Process log

From nightmare to hypercolour

The film opens with a silent black-and-white nightmare influenced by classic horror. Its restraint makes the following world feel more intense. Oversized eyes keep expressions readable on a phone and signal the environment’s effect on people. A nose rub, wall markings, and a plastic-bag shirt add smaller character details.

03 / Process log

Boats, creatures, and hidden references

Plastic-bottle vessels inspired the boats, while a stable horizon reduced motion sickness. Richer ships combine bottle-ocean-liner forms, containers, and barbed wire, with vintage Caronia posters as reference. A hissing cockroach, a grotesque close-up, a portable-toilet boat, Monkey Island’s three-headed monkey, Nosferatu, Hunter S. Thompson’s glasses, and Miles Davis all enter the same handmade world.

04 / Process log

Compositing the desert

Photographs, drawings, collage, and animation tests were redrawn and layered rather than simply inserted. The After Effects captures preserved in the archive show how many separate elements were required to make the changing desert, characters, and impossible machines cohere.

01 / Song, story, research

Survey the wasteland

The band supplied a base story for its concept album. Research into post-apocalyptic fiction set a polluted yellow-brown palette and drew on Waterworld, Mad Max 2, Fallout 2, Escape from New York, The Road and Night of the Comet.

02 / Storyboards and approval

Chart the voyage

Seven storyboard sheets mapped the voyage before production. They gave the band a complete view of the strange world, its rhythm and its narrative turns.

03 / Hero, eyes, first encounters

Open the nightmare

A silent black-and-white horror opening gives way to hypercolour. Oversized eyes stay readable on a phone screen and signal the polluted world’s altered state; small actions and wall details reward a closer look.

04 / Ocean, creatures, rich ships

Build impossible boats

Plastic-bottle vessels inspired the boats, while a stable horizon limited motion sickness. A hissing cockroach, a grotesque close-up, bottle ocean liners, containers and barbed wire turned familiar objects into the wasteland’s transport system.

05 / Games, monsters, music

Plant the references

A three-headed monkey nods to Monkey Island; Nosferatu, Hunter S. Thompson’s orange glasses and a Miles Davis moment enter the same visual universe. The TRIP shirt and portable-toilet boat keep the world knowingly absurd.
